Palma de Mallorca
Mallorca is a Mediterranean island in the west part of the Mediterranean Sea. The island is part of Spain so we speak Spanish and Catalan. Mallorca, as part of Spain, is part of the European Union (EU).
So if you travel to Mallorca from another EU country you won’t have any immigration check. The island of Mallorca is well connected with the rest of Europe thanks to its international Harbor close to the Palma historical center and to its international Airport, 5 miles (8 kilometers) far from the historical center of Palma. Airlines in Mallorca
Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI), also known as “Son Sant Joan”, is very big and well connected with Europe, particularly in summer time (from May to October). Air Europa has chosen it as its main base for Spain. But all European flights companies fly here. During winter time (from November to April) flights decrease and the island remains connected just with the main cities of Spain, Germany, Switzerland and UK (such as Barcelona, Madrid, Berlin, Munich, Zurich, London…).
Then there are also some flights of Alitalia, Air France, Austrian Airlines, AeroMexico, Etihad Airways, Air Serbia, Delta Air Lines, Tarom, Transavia, Adria Airways, Aegean Airlines, Aer Lingus, Aeroflot, Air Algérie, AirBaltic, Bulgaria Air, KLM…
Rent a Car at the Airport
Once you land in Mallorca, if you want to discover the island on your own, the best choice is to rent a car. The diameter of the island is about 43 miles (70 km). There are many car rental services at Mallorca Airport and the price varies a lot depending on the season. During low season (from September to June) prices are very low and cars are available. During the high season (July and August) prices rise a lot and, if you don’t book in advance, you risk not to find a car. There are international companies such as Europcar, Avis, Sixt, Recordgo… The cheapest company is Gold Car but their parking is a little bit far from the Airport with a free shuttle service at your disposal.
Taxis are at your disposal without problems any time of the year, just in front of the arrival door. Taxi service from Mallorca Airport to the town center costs around 30€. You can also book online in advance and obtain a good discount (for example with Balearic Transfer). The booked taxi drivers will welcome you at the “Meeting Point” of the Airport, in the middle of the arrival hall of the airport.
Public transportation from the Airport
If you need to reach the historical center from the Airport there is the public service in front of the arrival door, on the ground level of the check-in and arrivals areas. The journey takes around 15 minutes and costs 3€ per person (you can pay directly to the driver). Line 1 (operated by the public transportation of Palma) starts the service at around 06.00 AM and ends (during the winter at 01.10 AM) at around 01.50 AM during the summer. The bus runs each 15 minutes. If you want to reach the town center your best stop is in Plaça d’Espanya.
Mallorca by ferry
Palma de Mallorca Harbor is very big and well connected to Spain’s mainland – Barcelona and Valencia – and the other islands of the Balearic Archipelago, such as Menorca and Ibiza. Many ferry companies and cruisers stop here. The harbor is really close to Palma de Mallorca center (far 3 miles) and well connected by public transportation.
Traveling by ferry is useful if you want to bring your car with you or if you want to travel between the Balearic Archipelago islands. But traveling from Barcelona or Valencia to Mallorca by ferry takes 10 hours (plane takes 40 minutes) and normally costs as a flight. The main ferry companies in Mallorca are: Balearia and Trasmediterranea. During low season prices are more advantageous than during summer and holidays time.
Rent a Car at the Harbor
Once you land in Mallorca, there are many rental shops but the closer one is the Hertz shop at “Avinguda de Gabriel Roca, 44E”, just in front of the Harbor. They also started the electric car rent for the cruiser’s tourists. If you walk or you take a taxi to the center you will find other companies on the same Avenue (at around 1 mile there is the Gold Car). Like I said, during low season prices are very low and cars are available. While in the high season (July and August) prices rise up because of the high demand.
Public transportation from the Harbor
If you need to reach the historical center there is the public service just in front of the harbor. The journey takes around 5 minutes and costs 3€ per person (you can pay directly to the driver). Line 1 (operated by the public transportation of Palma) starts the service at around 06.00 AM and ends (during the winter at 01.10 AM) at around 01.50 AM during the summer. It is the same line of the Airport. The bus runs each 15 minutes. If you want to reach the town center a good stop can be Plaça d’Espanya.
Taxis are at your disposal without problems any time of the year, just in front of the arrival door. Taxi service from Mallorca Harbor to the town center costs around 10/15€, depending on the traffic. You can ask to your taxi driver to bring you down the Cathedral and from there you can walk and explore the beautiful town center.
